Thornhill is a thriving neighbourhood located just north of Metro Toronto, bounded roughly by Dufferin St to the west, Hwy 7 to the north, Steeles Ave to the south and Hwy 404 to the east, with a population well over 100,000. This growth has been very much driven by the fact that not only is it located right on Yonge Street, but is accessible to the city and the neighbouring communities by a network of major arteries. There is GO Train service at the Rutherford and Langstaff starions. This has made it an obvious choice as a suburban option for city workers.
Thornhill has many nearby amenities and attractions. There are close to 50 schools, which include public and private, as well as faith-based schools for Catholic, Jewish and Muslim students. There are also many day care facilities, community centres, libraries and green spaces.
Within Thornhill is the Promenade Shopping Centre, and, within easy driving distance, the huge Vaughan Mills Shopping Centre, along with the adjacent 330-acre Canada’s Wonderland theme park. Just a little farther, on the west side of the 400 is the Cortright and Boyd Conservation areas, both providing hiking and picnicking facilities. The world-famous McMichael gallery, featuring a large collection of Group of Seven and other Canadian artists is located in nearby Kleinburg, and on the east side, in Markham is the Pacific Mall
Shopping Centre.
There are several golf courses, including the Thornhill Golf & Country Club and the Uplands Golf & Ski Club. For hockey fans, the Markham Waxers is a Junior A team that has been part of the OHA, under various names, since 1902.
In Richmond Hill, the York Central Hospital services Thornhill and the surrounding area, and many residents also use the North York General Hospital in north central Toronto.
There has been a great deal of new development recently, and this has expanded the generally accepted boundaries of the community into the north and west; some of these new areas include Thornhill Woods south of Rutherford between Bathurst and Dufferin, Valleys of Thornhill at Rutherford and Dufferin, and Eagle Hills and Coronation at Dufferin and Major Mackenzie.
