Aurora Country

"You're in Good Company" in the Town of Aurora

Aurora is a picturesque town situated only 30 minutes north of Toronto. Referred to as The Heart of York Region, Aurora is situated among the rolling hills, lush valley land and large forest tracts of the environmentally noteworthy Oak Ridges Moraine.

While this town features scenic qualities and charming heritage facilities, it also provides many urban amenities for its approximately 53,892 residents. Subsequently, residents and visitors alike enjoy the blend of small town friendliness with urban services that Aurora affords.

Aurora Cultural Center
Aurora Museum

The community of Aurora was founded in 1793 when Yonge Street was extended north of Toronto. With the advancement of the railway in 1853, Aurora became an important link to Toronto and has thrived as a commercial and industrial town ever since. However, it was far enough from the bustling metropolitan centre of Toronto so it could maintain its close-knit community feel. Visitors are sure to see plenty of evidence that Aurora has taken great care in preserving its historical structures. In fact, in 2008, Aurora was awarded The Prince of Wales Prize for Municipal Heritage Leadership and in 2009, was awarded the Lieutenant Governor’s Ontario Heritage Award for Community Leadership in heritage conservation and promotion. On April 8, 2010, the newly renovated Church Street School was re-opened as the Aurora Cultural Centre, which promotes local arts and culture as well as archiving the extensive local historical collection.

Hilary HouseThere are many sporting and cultural facilities available, such as the Aurora Community Centre and the Aurora Public Library, over 500 acres of parkland, pedestrian trail systems, championship golf courses, fine dining, theatre, shopping and a host of community activities . Although there is no hospital within the boundaries of Aurora, Southlanke Regional Health Centre is located in the adjoining town of Newmarket.

Aurora boasts a wide variety of schools to choose from: Elementary and secondary public such as Aurora Grove Public School and Aurora High School, private (the prestigious St. Andrew's College), Catholic, French, daycare and Montessori schools.
