Unionville is an upscale suburb in the town of Markham, just northeast of Toronto. It was a vibrant area that combines city life with small town life. It borders Rodick Road and McCowan Road (west to east) and Major MacKenzie and the 407 (north to south). It has a large variety of public transit options, serviced by the TTC and VIVA (York Region and rapid transit bus system). The major highways going in and out of Unionville are Highway 7 and the 407.
The producers for the TV drama “Gilmore Girls” used Unionville’s scenic, small town look as the set for the show during the first season. Unionville’s downtown contains the historic Main Street, full of picturesque dining, artisans, beautiful views and numerous homes built in the nineteenth century. Main Street is also the site of many summer festivals, including a popular jazz festival and celtic music festival, which attracts visitors from other parts of Ontario. there are also a high amount of buildings along Main Street with Ontario historical designations.
Unionville was first settled in the late eighteenth century, with road development occurring in the mid nineteenth century, allowing for largest settlements to occur. In the 1960’s and 1970’s, a major housing development sprung up in Unionville and continues to grow. Many old building were bought by antique businesses, and Unionville was known as a destination spot for antiquing, especially in the mid 1970’s. Today, housing development continues to grow in Unionville, and it has retained its charming “antique” look.
